Batata Ma’ Lahmeh Mafroomeh – Potatoes With Minced Meat Recipe

The ultimate comfort food for me is this stir-fried minced meat dish. The tender potatoes and flavorful gravy are like a warm embrace for my soul. This well-known Chinese hawker dish is great with steaming rice and is enjoyed by both kids and adults.

185 ½ Minced meat (beef, lean)
 1 Potatoes (large)
 ¼ Onions (large)
  tsp Salt
 Black pepper (to taste)
¼ tsp Arabic mixed spice (or All Spice)
  tbsp Sunflower oil
 Sunflower oil
FOR THE YOGHURT SAUCE
  cup Yoghurt (full fat)
¼ tbsp Sesame seed paste ('Tahini' in Arabic)
  tsp Salt
 ¾ tbsp Parsley (chopped)
 ½ Garlic cloves

1

Fry the potatoes in hot oil until they turn golden brown. Once done, remove them from the oil place them on a plate with paper towels to absorb the excess oil.

2

In another pot on high heat, fry the chopped onions in the sunflower oil until they turn translucent.

3

Lower the heat to medium and add the minced meat, Arabic mixed spice, black pepper and salt. Keep mixing and stirring the meat until it turns brown and the water it releases has evaporated. Break apart any large lumps of meat that form.

4

Now put the heat on low, add the minced meat and onions on top of the fried potatoes and mix gently. Leave it on low heat until hot (about 5 minutes). Do not cover.

This dish is served with a special yoghurt mix that is made by mixing together the yoghurt with tahini, salt, chopped parsley and crushed garlic.
